Freeze government salaries?

Is Governor David Paterson ready to consider a wage freeze? Based on what he told reporters Sunday, the answer may be yes.

The governor was asked to comment on the idea as presented in an op-ed by John Faso, the 2006 gubernatorial candidate.

"I'll probably give him a ring and ask for more detail," Paterson said Sunday.

School districts, local governments and the state itself could save billions of dollars if the Legislature declared a "fiscal emergency" and froze public employee wages, Faso wrote in an op-ed in Sunday's Times Union.

E.J. McMahon of the Empire Center proposed a statewide wage freeze in early November (here). He noted Federal courts twice have upheld state-mandated wage freezes.
