Cuomo says "hundreds" may be involved in pension scam

Keeping track of government lawyers with questionable pension deals may soon require a computer spreadsheet. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo told the Times Union editorial board that the school district cases are "the tip of the iceberg."

Cuomo predicted there could easily be hundreds of cases in which lawyers or others such as engineers or doctors have wrongly been listed as employees rather than contractors in order to get taxpayer-funded pension benefits.
One of the lawyers is Maureen Harris, who sits on the the Public Service Commission, which regulates electric, natural gas and telephone rates. She accrued a year's worth of government pension credits while her law firm, Girvin & Ferlazzo, did legal work for the Hamilton Fulton Montgomery BOCES.

She agreed to pay a $50,000 settlement to avoid prosecution by Cuomo. She also lost a year of pension credits.

In an apparent effort to persuade more lawyers to accept settlements, Cuomo says he may pursue criminal charges in the future.
